Weeknotes: 22 May
All over the shop
Right now this is the close of Friday — this is the last thing I do before the weekend. My body and brain need the weekend. It’s been quite a week.
As I said last week I cant talk about one thing — but as a team were moving away from that, that said I’m in two teams and I’m definitely only feeling connected to because of history — most team meetings fall at a time I can’t do.
The other team I’m in doesn’t have a name yet it is this https://www.civilserviceworld.com/articles/interview/%E2%80%98i-don%E2%80%99t-believe-change-comes-issuing-orders-people%E2%80%99-%E2%80%93-civil-service-coo-alex so for the sake of my weeknotes for now I’ll go with ‘Not Issuing Orders’.
This stuff makes my heart sing, at the same time as it’s quite big heavy stuff. I have an involvement shaped hat. Even in our team we don’t call it involvement, we had a discussion and were going with the tried and tested engagement, still I don’t see it that way I was glad when I heard the term involvement. My hat it is and always will be also design and development (I would use the term organisational but I don’t think that works as a lens) I mean it does work as a lens but not the one I wear most of the time. I’m very early in Systems Thinking to work through if there is an equivalent thing or group of people. Any way it’s easier just to say I’m being David Buck, and I get to both fill up on and sprinkle my fairy dust.
The focus now is all pointing towards Civil Service Online, we have lots to do and lots we want to do. I’ve also started to whittle down the things I’m going to jump up and down about — life is a compromise, but there are just some things that you will never hear me say or see me write down. My favorite one of these in the past is ‘The Business’ a term frequently used in HR it’s othering and feels a little awkward to me. I try not to use ‘They’ either for the same reasons.
The terms that are perplexing me at the moment in this work, well we will see where we get too. Anyway I’ll get more into the detail as we progress, this week some new people have joined and brought some fantastic skills which means that something that felt like a pipedream last week is in some shape going to become a reality. It also meant I had to go back through the storming, forming phases — I seem to go through it quite quickly — still some things bug me — it’s interesting how change is always in parts it’s never one thing and everything is different for everybody even though we seem innate built to look at change as a singularity, going to one point. Even though most of me is through stroming some things still persist, what I’m keen to do with my ODD hat on is not to let them create unfinished business. I sense one burning thing that might if I let if fester, so I tackfully (I think) brought it up in an email, and I shall again if needs be.
This morning I did this with many fantastic people at DfE. It was my first heavy use of microsoft teams and I’m grateful for the team in DfE in getting this working and all the effort they put in behind the scenes. I’m looking forward to seeing all the things that spring from that point. I also no a little bit more about DfE which is great, nothing is ever as simple as it seems.
This takes me back to some thinking that popped into my head Sunday morning, it was so good I couldn’t sleep so I got up early and wrote it down. It was in essence the nature of system nesting from macro to micro to me, it’s not finished it definitely needs work, I scribbled it down and captured it — I can leave it to float around in my brain to be picked up later in one omy flicking through my notes moments.
Oh and for the first time in ages I had a migraine this week, the reality is I still have it a little, it came Wednesday lunchtime, but I know that time outside over the long weekend will I’m sure mean it’s fully gone by Tuesday. It means I’ve done less time this week than I thought I would but that doesn't matter.
Be kind to yourselves people. Keep being butterflies chasing flowers, when you have the energy.
